Wisconsin Red Cross volunteers are heading to Colorado

WISCONSIN (WKOW)-- Red Cross chapters across the country have mobilized volunteers to go down to Colorado to respond to the recent flooding. Emergency management officials in Colorado say at least four people have died and more than 170 others are still unaccounted for.

Red Cross chapters in Wisconsin have deployed four volunteers to head down to Colorado. Two volunteers are from the Chippewa Falls area and the other two are from Milwaukee. All four volunteers will spend the next two weeks assisting the hundreds of evacuated people in Colorado.

Red Cross organizers in Madison are expecting to deploy several local volunteers over the next few days. These volunteers will focus on providing physical and mental health services. Organizers say it's difficult to find volunteers who have enough medical training to fit their requirements under such short notice.

"What's going on right now is the Red Cross is opening many shelters for those who have been evacuated so they may be in the shelter not only to provide a warm meal, cot and a blanket, but also to make sure they are getting that emotional support through this situation," Red Cross Disaster Services Specialist Katie Gaynor says.
