Police: DC shooter acted alone

UPDATE (WKOW) -- Police in Washington, D.C. say they believe a man who went on a shooting spree at the Washington Navy Yard acted alone.

The shooter has been identified as 34-year-old Aaron Alexis.

Earlier in the day, authorities were looking for someone they believed may have been involved, but now they say they believe Alexis was the lone gunman.

"We feel comfortable right now that we've exhausted all means to eliminate that possible last suspect. So we do now feel comfortable that we have the single and sole person responsible for the loss of life inside of the base today," Metropolitan Police Dept. Chief Cathy Lanier said at a briefing Monday night.

Investigators say Alexis opened fire at the base Monday morning, killing 12 people and injuring eight others before authorities shot and killed him.

Alexis is a former Navy reservist who was working as a contractor for the Department of Defense. Investigators say he had access to the base because he was a contractor.

Authorities say the victims range in age from 46 to 73 years old. Of the few who had been identified by Monday night, all are civilians or contractors, and none are active military personnel.
