State Senate blocks locals from blocking hunting

Posted:

MADISON (AP) -- The state Senate has passed a Republican bill that would disallow local governments from restricting bow and crossbow hunting.

Current state law prohibits local governments from restricting hunting, fishing and trapping unless the prohibition furthers public health and safety.

The bill passed Tuesday would expand that prohibition to include bow and crossbow hunting. Restrictions could be placed on hunting within 100 yards of a building on government land.

The bill would also leave in place the state's current prohibition on hunting within 1,700 feet of a hospital, school or mental hospital.

The Republican-controlled Senate passed the bill on a party line 18-15 vote. It previously passed the Assembly and now heads to Gov. Scott Walker.

MADISON (WKOW) -- The state Senate is likely to pass a Republican bill that wouldn't allow local governments to restrict bow and crossbow hunting.

Right now, state law blocks local governments from restricting hunting, fishing and trapping unless the prohibition furthers public health and safety.

The bill would prohibit local governments from adopting any restrictions blocking bow and crossbow hunting. But locals could prohibit bow and crossbow hunting within 100 yards of a building and on government land. The also could require hunter to fire their arrow and bolts toward the ground.

The bill would leave the state's current prohibition on hunting within 1,700 feet of a hospital, school or mental hospital in place.

The state Assembly passed the bill in June. The Senate is expected to take it up Tuesday.
