Eau Claire woman faces several charges after scuffle with officer

Eau Claire (WQOW) - An Eau Claire woman faces several charges after getting into a scuffle with an Eau Claire County Sheriff's Office detective.

Carrie L. Fitzgerald, 28, was accused of taking $400 from the safe at the Corner Store on Highway 93 on September 6. The store manager said Fitzgerald can be seen on surveillance footage taking money from the safe and changing a shift checkout sheet. The manager said Fitzgerald works in the kitchen and was not responsible for working a cash register.

On September 13, a detective arrived at the Corner Store and asked Fitzgerald about the theft.  Detectives say after Fitzgerald was told she was under arrest, she became visibly agitated and tried to leave. When the detective tried to stop her, Fitzgerald allegedly scratched his face and grabbed his glasses and broke them. The detective was able to wrestle Fitzgerald to the ground and while on her stomach, he said she grabbed for the detective's gun. The detective pried Fitzgerald's hand off the gun and was eventually able to handcuff her.

Detectives say she later admitted she stole the money and said she gave half of it to a co-worker, saying she's "not good at stealing."

She now faces charges of battery of a peace officer, attempting to disarm a peace officer, resisting an officer, criminal damage to property and misdemeanor theft.

Fitzgerald is scheduled to appear in court on October 28.
