Sikh Temple shooting survivor pushes for more gun control

Posted:

MILWAUKEE (WKOW) -- A Sikh man whose father was killed in a shooting rampage at their Wisconsin temple last year says Monday's shooting at a Washington Navy Yard reinforces the need for stronger gun laws and more stringent background checks for gun buyers.

Amardeep Kaleka was traveling to Washington Tuesday to meet with lawmakers and their staffers regarding gun laws. The trip was planned two to three weeks ago, but Kaleka says Monday's shooting added a sense of urgency.

Kaleka says he and relatives of other shooting tragedies want gun buyers to undergo stricter background checks. He also wants background checks for those who buy guns at gun shows.

He says he's made the same pitch to lawmakers before, but he's competing with the NRA's horde of paid lobbyists.

Kaleka's father was one of six people killed in the temple shooting.
