MERRILL (AP) -- Authorities say a man has died in a crash in Lincoln County while fleeing with his drug-addicted infant daughter.

The 3-week-old baby and an 18-year-old passenger in the man's vehicle were not seriously injured in the crash Tuesday afternoon near Merrill.

The Wisconsin Department of Justice issued a statewide crime alert for the man after he took the baby who was in the court-ordered care of Taylor County Human Services.

WAOW-TV says the 24-year-old man lost control of his vehicle, hit another car and went off the road while fleeing from state agents.

LINCOLN COUNTY (WAOW) - One person is dead and two people are hurt after a crash in Lincoln County, according to Wisconsin State Patrol.

According to a news release, a 24-year-old man had taken his three-week old daughter, prompting a crime alert to be issued. Authorities say a court order required the girl to be turned over to Taylor County Human Services since "she was born drug dependent and is in need of medical care."

Authorities say they tried to stop the man's car, but he tried to get away. The man lost control of his car, hit another car, and went off the road on County Highway W at Center Road in Lincoln County, according to Wisconsin State Patrol. It happened around 4:30 p.m.

Witnesses say it was a scary situation.

"You could see the one car in a ditch, it was really really bad," said Patrick Westberg of Wausau. He was driving to Merrill for a volleyball game. He says he saw the aftermath of the crash.

"It was one of the scariest things I've seen," said Westberg.

The 24-year-old man was not wearing his seat belt and died, officers said. The infant and a 18-year-old female passenger were not seriously hurt, authorities said, but they were taken to a hospital.

The investigation is ongoing.

A section of County Road W was closed between Highway 64 and Center Road while crews investigated Tuesday evening.
