Developer looks to sell Barstow St. building for Confluence Project

Eau Claire (WQOW) - The future of one site that could be used by the Confluence Project is being discussed.

Three years ago, the city of Eau Claire sold the building at Two South Barstow Street to developer John Mogenson for $5 with the understanding he would improve it, which would add to the city's tax base. At the time, Mogenson was interested in renovating it for apartments and commercial space. The building has now been gutted but remains vacant. Mogenson is now asking the city's Redevelopment Authority if he can sell the building so it could be demolished to make way for the Confluence Project.

"At this point the Redevelopment Authority does have a contract through the purchase and development agreement whereby he is responsible for $800,000 of value on Janurary 1st of 2014," said Mike Schatz, Eau Claire Economic Development Administrator.

That stipulation is key as the city negotiates with Mogenson. The Redevelopment Authority did not give a timetable on when a decision would be made. The city says Confluence Project developers are interested in the site.
