WI Dept. of Health Services audit shows questionable charges to Medicaid

MADISON (WKOW) -- The federal government may try to get back nearly $23 million from the State of Wisconsin.

According to the Wisconsin State Journal, a federal audit to be released today alleges the Wisconsin Department of Health Services failed to adequately document $22.8 million charged to the federal Medicaid program. Auditors recommend the government seek reimbursement for the potential overcharges for services at 27 residential care centers. RCCs are private, non-governmental entities that provide custodial care and treatment to clients 21 and under.

The State Journal reports the audit shows the federal Medicaid program paid $23.9 million for HealthCheck services between October 1, 2004 and September 30, 2006. But the audit claims just $1.1 million in charges were allowable.

Wisconsin Health Secretary Kitty Rhoades says auditors misinterpreted and misapplied their own laws and rules in the situation.
