MADISON (WKOW) -- Madison police announced Friday the suspension of two veteran officers for violating department policy earlier this year.

The report, from MPD Internal Affairs, says the sound of gunshots on January 3 in rural Columbia County prompted a call to the Columbia County Sheriff's Office, who responded to the rsidence of Madison police officers Cary and Emily House.

The report states the two officers had been socializing with acquantances that evening, when the officers' firearms were fired from their backyard toward an unpopulated area. Columbia County authorities claim Cary House discharged a gun while under the influence and was arrested for Intoxicated Use of a Firearm. Emily House wasn't charged, though the ensuing investigation revealed she had likely driven in an intoxicated state that evening.

The Madison Police Department determined Officer Carey House violated several department policies, and reprimanded and suspended him without pay for a total of 30 days. Officer Emily House was suspended a total of nine days.

Emily House joined the Madison police force in 2007 and has received 13 commendations. Carey House joined the department in 2008 and has received four commendations.
