ObamaCare insurance company list released for area counties

Eau Claire (WQOW)- The back and forth debate over ObamaCare has filled the airwaves in recent years but it's the details of the plan that many health care providers and businesses are now focusing on.  We're two weeks away from a major component of ObamaCare kicking in.  Enrollment for insurance exchanges will begin and new details seem to emerge every day.  On Friday, we're learning about competition for new clients.

Signing up for your health care coverage under the Affordable Care Act will begin in less than two weeks.  But many people still are in the dark when it comes to the new exchange.

Experts say about 500,000 Wisconsinites will be looking for coverage.  But how many companies will be competing for them?  A recent list shows two insurance companies will cover all individuals entering the exchange in Eau Claire, Chippewa and Dunn Counties.  Three companies will cover small businesses.

"Definitely I would like to see more," says Eau Claire County Republican Chairman Mike Conlin.  "Before the Affordable Health Care Act, I offer insurance to my employees and I can choose from probably 6 to 10 different insurers."

An Eau Claire Democrat would also like to see more companies competing.

"I think that will come," explains Eau Claire County Democrat Volunteer Eleanor Wolf.  "I think there is just a lot of misapprehension and fear about what the program is going to do and what the costs are going to be to the insurance companies."

And speaking of costs: numbers were released earlier this month that show rates could go up dramatically for many people.  But those numbers did not include subsidies from the federal government which will reduce how much you could have to pay.

"The government estimates that 90 percent of the people who are eligible for the Affordable Care Act are going to get a subsidy," Wolf points out.

If you don't have coverage right now, once you do select an insurance company, you will then have a list of options on what type of care you want starting with what's called a bronze package and going up to platinum.  The higher you go, the more you have to pay.  But also the coverage will improve.
