Sex offender compliance check in Eau Claire County

Eau Claire (WQOW) - U.S. Marshals want to know if sex offenders are living where they say they are... so an operation was launched in Eau Claire County.

U.S. Marshals teamed up with state and local law enforcement officers last week.  They checked the addresses of 171 registered sex offenders in Eau Claire County and 16 were not compliant.  Those cases will now be investigated.  WQOW News 18 reached out to investigators for more information, but have not heard back.

U.S. MARSHALS, STATE, AND LOCAL LAW ENFORCEMENT CONDUCT SEX OFFENDER COMPLIANCE CHECK IN EAU CLAIRE COUNTY

 

Eau Claire County, Wis. – The US Marshals along with the Wisconsin Department of Corrections Sex Offender Registry Program, the Eau Claire County Sheriff's Department, and the Eau Claire Police Department conducted a residence verification operation for registered sex offenders.  On September 10th and September 11th teams checked the addresses of 171 registered sex offenders in Eau Claire County.   Sixteen offenders were found to be non-compliant.  The Sex Offender Registry Program Specialist will investigate these and make recommendations to the district attorney.

This initiative is part of the working relationship between the US Marshals Sex Offender Investigations Branch and the Wisconsin Department of Corrections Sex Offender Registration Program which monitors all 22,774 Wisconsin Sex Offenders.  The Wisconsin Department of Corrections maintains a database for the general public at http://offender.doc.state.wi.us/public/.
