President Obama discusses terrorist attack with Kenyan President Kenyatta

Posted:

WASHINGTON (WKOW) -- Sunday morning, President Barack Obama phoned Kenyan President Uhuru Kenyatta to express the United States' condolences after the terrorist attack on a Nairobi shopping mall.

The White House said Obama also told Kenyatta the United States supports Kenya's effort to bring the al-Shabab, Somalia's al-Qaida-linked rebel group, to justice for the deadly attack.

Al-Shabab attacked an upscale shopping mall on September 21.  The attack killed 59 people, wounded at least 175, and still has hostages a day later.  According to U.S. officials, one woman from the United States was killed, and four other U.S. citizens were injured.

The attackers say the strike was retribution for Kenyan forces' 2011 push into Somalia.

The White House says Obama reaffirmed the United States' partnership with the East African country.
