UPDATE: Kenya interior minister says 2 male militants killed

NAIROBI, KENYA (WKOW) -- Kenya's interior minister says two Islamic extremists have been killed on Monday after forces waged a military operation to rescue the hostages still inside the mall in Nairobi.

A top military official says he believes the attackers are "a multinational collection from all over the world."

Interior Minister Joseph Ole Lenku says the two militants died from "our morning activities" after four large blasts rocked the Westgate Mall and sent large plumes of smoke into the air.

Kenya Chief of Defense forces Gen. Julius Karangi says fighters from an array of nations participated in the attack claimed by al-Shabab, a Somali group allies with al-Qaida.

As of Monday morning, the minister says some hostages have been released and those remaining are minimal.

NAIROBI, KENYA (WKOW) -- Reporters on scene in Kenya say multiple large blasts have rocked Westgate Mall where a hostage siege enters its third day.

On Monday, Associated Press reporters on scene say they heard multiple blasts and a barrage of gunfire.  They also saw black and grey smoke rise from the mall.

For the third day in a row, security forces have been attempting to rescue an unknown number of hostages that remain captive inside the mall by al-Qaida-linked terrorists.
