Wisconsin counties ask Gov. Walker to reconsider Medicaid decision

Posted:

MADISON (WKOW) -- Representatives from the Wisconsin Counties Association will hold a news conference Monday afternoon to ask Gov. Scott Walker to accept federal Medicaid benefits for BadgerCare.

The news conference comes on the same day Wisconsin started sending letters to approximately 92,000 state residents to inform them they will be losing their BadgerCare Medicaid benefits by the end of the year. Those people are being asked to enroll in the new health insurance exchange, or marketplace, which opens for enrollment October 1.

Gov. Walker's budget strips BadgerCare Medicaid benefits from those earning between 100 percent and 200 percent of the poverty level. Walker rejected federal money that would keep those earning up to 138 percent of the poverty level enrolled in Medicaid.

Citizen Action of Wisconsin plans to join county leaders outside of the Wisconsin County Association's 2013 Conference on Monday to discuss a Sunday vote by the Association to call on Gov. Walker to reverse course on BadgerCare and accept enhanced federal funds.

During and after the budget debate counties across the state have been speaking out, passing resolutions in favor of extending BadgerCare and seeking alternative means to access the federal funds.
