Man accused of shooting deputy charged with attempted murder

Taylor County (WQOW) - The man accused of shooting a central Wisconsin sheriff's deputy now stands charged with first degree attempted murder.

Alexander Schneider of Westboro was charged Monday in Taylor County. Six other criminal charges were also filed against him.

Schneider is charged with shooting and wounding Deputy Chad Kowalczyk. He was shot in the stomach and had to undergo emergency surgery.

According to the charges, Schneider's ex-girlfriend complained that he had called and text messaged her 26 times. He was under a court order not to have any contact with her.

Kowalczyk told investigators he went to Schneider's home to question him about the incident, but that he refused to come out of his house. As they were talking through the door, Kowalczyk said Schneider shot at him through a glass door. The deputy then ran for cover by his squad car and said he heard more gunshots hit his car and windshield.

"I guess it was out of anger, rage, depression that I shot him," said Schneider.

Detectives say Schneider said he shot at the deputy out of "anger, rage and depression"and that he had planned to kill himself. Schneider is due in court Tuesday on the charges.
