Eau Claire (WQOW) -- The UW-Eau Claire football team is looking forward to its home opener Saturday, but after two road losses, the Blugolds will face another tough opponent: Pacific Lutheran is currently ranked tenth in the D3 Football.com poll.
All of UWEC's first three opponents are currently ranked in the Top 25. The Blugolds got a bye last Saturday, and players say they were able to refresh and regroup. Now, they're ready for the challenge ahead.
"I think the energy is really high," says Blugolds junior cornerback Thurgood Dennis, "I think if you go to Carson Park on Saturday you're going to see a bunch of guys that want to have fun on the football team for the first time. Defensively, I think we had a miserable first two weeks, the second half of St. John's we kind of turned it around a little bit, but right now I think we're ready to go out there and compete and have fun and that's going to be a first for us this his season."
"That bye week is huge," says UWEC senior tight end Alex Delebreau, "because it gives us a chance to work on our rhythm a little bit more, add a few things, maybe make some adjustments, and I think it's just a confidence thing, getting out there, getting your feet wet, you got a lot of new guys out there, new quarterback, it's just get your feet wet before this conference schedule comes and I think this week you'll see a big change in our offense."
This will be the first-ever meeting between UWEC and Pacific Lutheran. Kickoff between the Blugolds and Lutes is set for 12:00 noon, Saturday, at Carson Park.
