WI GOP legislator wants to limit high-capacity well regulations

MADISON (WKOW) -- Senator Neal Kedzie wants to limit high-capacity well regulations.

According to the Wisconsin State Journal, Kedzie introduced a bill which would require the Department of Natural Resources to make permitting decisions within 65 days; waive permit requirements for well that would replace another well within 75 feet, unless it would result in additional groundwater withdrawal; prohibit restrictions beyond what currently exists on whether a well can be drilled; and prohibit the DNR from placing more restrictions on replacement wells beyond those governing the original well.

Nick George of the Midwest Food Processors Association is in favor of the bill, saying it would ensure his industry is treated fairly.

Former DNR water administrator, Todd Ambs, says DNR staff should be allowed to limit pumping to protect nearby groundwater.
