Wind farm in St. Croix County gains key state approval

St. Croix County (WQOW) - A controversial proposal to put dozens of wind turbines in St. Croix County wins approval from a state agency Thursday.

The Public Service Commission (PSC) voted to approve the proposed Highland Wind Farm. The vote was 2-1. The plans call for up to 44 wind turbines.

Earlier this year the PSC had rejected the proposal over concerns whether the turbines might violate state noise standards. But a PSC spokeswoman says the company was able to prove it could comply with those standards by curtailing some of the turbines at night making them more quiet.

Clean Wisconsin, an environmental organization, says the project will bring 100 jobs to St. Croix County and generate enough clean energy to power 29,000 homes.

The company can now start construction. Opponents could still appeal the decision to the PSC.
