WI DNR seeking comments on 'fish sticks' permit

Posted:

MADISON (WKOW) -- Wisconsin fisheries officials are looking for feedback on a new permit for creating fish habitat along private shorelines.

Property owners currently need to get individual permits to submerge groups of trees, known as "fish sticks," in near-shore areas. The trees can provide shelter and feeding areas for a number of fish species as well as nesting and sunning areas for creatures above the water.

But each individual permit application requires a 30-day public comment period. The Department of Natural Resources has developed a statewide general permit that agency officials say they can approve faster.

The DNR will take public comments on the new permit's conditions and standards through Oct. 24. The agency hopes to have the permit finalized and ready by Thanksgiving.
