Homeless family offered about $10,000 in rent money

MADISON (WKOW) -- A Chicago family trying to make a life in Madison has gotten a big boost of support. An anonymous donor wants to pay for six months to a year of housing, which is roughly $10,000.

Angelisa Bullock says her family left Chicago's southside to escape the violence. They spent time sleeping on Madison's streets before two police officers offered to help. Wednesday, we showed you how people who just want to help have been putting the family of 11 up at a local hotel. "The people here are so nice, and they're so peaceful," Bullock says. Now, someone has offered to help the family with rent, according to the Salvation Army Director of Social Services Leigha Weber, who's been working with the family.

Weber says they just need a landlord to accept the family's tenant applications. It's the most difficult part of the process for all of the families they serve, she says. "All of our families are experiencing significant barriers that prevents a lot of landlords from easily accepting their applications," Weber tells 27 News. Past evictions, inconsistent housing and criminal records are all barrier that keep people on the streets, she says. There are almost 80 families on the Salvation Army's wait list for shelter right now.

For Angelisa and the big family, two have gotten jobs and she says more are looking. All they can do is keep moving forward, she says. "People that don't know us, strangers, they've been just wonderful," she says.
