MADISON (WKOW) -- The Wisconsin National Guard is preparing to furlough hundreds of employees if the federal government shuts down at midnight.
Public Affairs Director Maj. Paul Rickert says more than 1,000 federal technicians are affected, but only roughly 800 will be furloughed. Those employees will report to work Tuesday but will be put on emergency furlough.
Rickert says about 210 employees will still work through a shutdown. Those employees will have to work without pay until lawmakers reach an agreement.
"Those are the employees who are essential to the continued operation of either maintenance or protection of our military equipment or facilities, and also those people who need to stay on station in the event of an emergency in the state or nation so that we would be prepared to react if needed," says Rickert.
Rickert says those workers will be paid retroactively once the shutdown ends. Emergency furloughed employees will not be paid retroactively for their furlough time unless a law is enacted providing authority to pay them.
Wisconsin Department of Military Affairs state employees will continue to work their normal schedules.
Officials say in the event of a state emergency the Guard can still be called up by the governor for active duty.
