Special veteran position created at local university to help with enrollment

Menomonie (WQOW)- A local university has added a new position this year to help veterans with the paper work process of signing up for school.

UW-Stout is known as a military-friendly school and currently has more than 320 veterans enrolled there.  Those veterans responded in a survey that they wanted more help when it came to all the extra paper work they had to fill out.  So the new position was added.

"When I came off active duty in early 2010, I was trying to figure out a lot of the benefits on my own.  That was a difficult process to navigate," remembers Military Education Benefits Coordinator John Bensend.  "So having somebody who is there who can help answer your questions and knows where to go can be really helpful."

Bensend has been a member of the Wisconsin National Guard for seven years, and was deployed to Iraq in 2009.  He is also a UW-Stout graduate.
