SCAM ALERT: Elderly couple scammed out of $12,000


MADISON (WKOW) -- A Madison couple is out $12,000 after scammers convinced them they were helping their grandson. 

According to a Madison Police Department incident report the couple, ages 86 an 89, received a call from someone pretending to be their grandson. They talked to another person pretending to be his lawyer who persuaded them to send $7,000 to an address in Philadelphia. He later convinced them to send $5,000 more to place in Gardena, California to settle the case. 

The couple was told their grandson injured somebody in a hit-and-run crash while he was drunk. None of it was true. They figured that out after calling their son, the boy's father. 

The fake attorney provided two phone numbers to the victims:
