Waunakee twins pose double trouble for state tennis tournament

MADISON, WI (WKOW) -- A girls tennis duo from Waunakee high school could prove to be double the trouble at the state tournament.

Tilly and Shelby Chorney have played singles tennis for the past 3 years. It was not until this year that they decided to play high school doubles.

"I think it was just better to develop our games in singles than doubles," said Shelby.

Both have seen success at the state tournament as singles, each advancing for the past two years. But coach Jeff Pruefer thought it he could put them together, they might be able to make that final jump and bring home the state title.

The Chorney twins are now 14-1 after beating Middleton in the sectional finals on Thursday at UW's Nielson Tennis Stadium.

They're just so supportive of each other," said Pruefer. "They've been singles players for many, many years, out there on the court by themselves. Being sisters, being twins, you can just tell how much they care about each other and that translates over well to the court."

Tennis is a family affair for the Chorney's. Their younger sister, Bailey, is a freshman on Waunakee's team, and their parents, Tom and Doneta, are both tennis pros.

Waunakee finished second overall at sectionals, while Middleton took home first place and advancing to a fourth straight state team tournament. Middleton's Bridget Bellisimo won the singles' first flight.
