Minor airlifted to hospital after rollover crash; man charged with 4th OWI


PRESS RELEASE from Buffalo County Sheriff's Office - On Friday, October 11, 2013 at approximately 4 p.m. the Buffalo County Sheriff's Office received a report of a one vehicle motor vehicle rollover crash with a person pinned under a 2003 Pontiac Sunfire on CTH D neat the intersection of CTH I in the town of Nelson. Investigation of the crash indicated that 42 year old Robert Burda of Nelson, WI was the operator of the vehicle. Vehicle had rolled and come to a rest on its top. A 16 yr. old female who was not wearing a seatbelt was thrown from the vehicle as it rolled. Vehicle rolled onto its top, pinning the 16 yr. old underneath. Fire Dept. personnel were able to free the 16 yr. old who suffered life threatening injuries and was airlifted to an Eau Claire hospital.

Two other passengers were Samantha Kopinksi - Smith and Deanna Dregeny both 18 years of age from the Mondovi area. These were believed to be wearing seatbelts. They did not report receiving injuries. The 16 year female was transported by Med-Link air Ambulance Service to an Eau Claire hospital; Burda was transported by Western Buffalo County Ambulance Service with minor injuries to Durand Hospital. Burda was charged and arrested for Operating a Motor Vehicle While Intoxicated Causing Injury 4th offense and is being held at the Buffalo County Jail.

Assisting at the scene was Nelson Fire Department and the WI State Patrol. The accident remains under investigation. Speed and alcohol were believed to be factors in the crash. Investigation is continuing at this time by Buffalo County Sheriff and WI. State Patrol.
