CALIFORNIA (WKOW) -- An ordinary snorkeling trip turned up this monstrous discovery. You're looking at a rare 18-foot oarfish.
It was spotted by a marine science instructor off Catalina Island in Southern California.
It was dead when she approached it and it took 15 people to bring it to shore.
Oarfish mostly live in waters 3,000 feet deep, which means scientists are rarely able to study them. The giant oarfish is the longest bony fish species and can reach lengths up to 56 feet long.
