Air bag defect prompts Toyota to recall 803,000 sedans

DETROIT (WKOW) -- Toyota is recalling 803,000 sedans in the United States as the air bags or power steering could stop working.

Affected are model years 2012 and 2013 of the Camry, Camry hybrid, Avalon, Avalon hybrid, and Venza.

Toyota says water from the air conditioning condenser can leak onto the air bag control module and cause a short circuit.  If that happens, it could illuminate the air bag warning light, disable the air bag or even cause it to deploy inadvertently.

If the air bag control module is damaged, the power steering assist function could become inoperable, making the vehicles harder to steer.

Toyota knows of two minor injuries, but no accidents, related to the defect.

Starting next month, owners will be notified.  Toyota dealers will repair the problem for free.
