East Towne Mall shoppers help stop shoplifters

MADISON (WKOW) -- Two shoppers helped security guards hold down a pair of shoplifters at East Towne Mall Thursday night.

According to a Madison Police report, 22-year-old Tiffany Brown and 17-year-old Matthew Mutiva tried to take a couple fleece tops from the JC Penney store at the mall Thursday around 5:35 p.m.

When a security guard tried to stop Brown, she tried to conceal the stolen merchandise and attempted to run. The security guard then grabbed her and pushed her toward a wall. Police say Mutiva tried punching the security guard, but the security guard dodged the blow and pushed both suspects towards the wall.

When a second security guard came to assist, Brown tried to kick him. Two shoppers joined forces with the security guards to help hold down the suspects until police arrived.

Officers said Brown was yelling and swearing when they got to the scene, saying she had been involved in past retail thefts, but had never been treated this way by security personnel. She told police she thought they had acted inappropriately by using force to detain her.

Brown, from Madison, was arrested for Disorderly Conduct and Retail Theft. Mutiva, from Sun Prairie, was arrested for Disorderly Conduct and Party To A Crime - Retail Theft.
