Eau Claire (WQOW) - Hope and determination were on the minds of many today as they took part in the 6th annual Making Strides Against Breast Cancer Walk.

"We're very fortunate to live in a great community like this, "said survivor Cheryl Rue,  "where people are willing to come out and do something for others."

Survivors, supporters friends, family and even dogs came out by the hundreds all to raise money for the American Cancer Society.

"All of the proceeds from today's event go to specifically breast cancer research, "says event coordinator Courtney Haas "and to our programs for our survivors and cancer patients and their families."

With each stride there was a memory, a memory of someone who's been affected by breast cancer.

"On December 13th 2011 I was told I had breast cancer," said survivor Paula Loomis

"I was diagnosed three years ago, so every six months is like a little celebration," said Rue

"My mom was diagnosed with breast cancer when I was younger and that's where I got the passion to help those that are currently fighting the disease," added Haas.

The hope of the walk is that eventually there will be no more walks and the disease can be cured. Until then, there will continue to be many people wearing pink looking for that cure.

"It can't save me, it can't save my mom, it can't save my sister. But it might save my daughter and that's all I care about," said Loomis.

More than 500 people took part in the walk and more than $250,000 was raised. WQOW News 18 has been a proud sponsor of the making strides walk since its start six years ago.
