UPDATE: Person found dead in Janesville is Milton police officer

JANESVILLE (WKOW) -- The body found in Janesville Sunday evening has been identified as 43-year-old John Conger, a Lieutenant and Public Information Officer with the Milton Police Department, according to the Department of Justice Office of Criminal Investigation.

Officials says Conger died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

Conger has been with the department since May 1, 1992.

Milton Police Chief Dan Layber issued the following statement:
"Our thoughts and prayers go out to Lt. Conger's family and loved ones.  John is going to be dearly missed by all of us at the Milton Police Department.  He was a dedicated officer who was committed to the Milton community, spearheading many of the police department's outreach and educational activities.  His absence will be felt deeply by all who knew him."

JANESVILLE (WKOW) -- Janesville police say the Wisconsin Division of Criminal Investigation is looking into a death Sunday.

Janesville police officers were called to the 4100 block of Kennedy Road Sunday evening. DCI says the investigation is being handled jointly by the Janesville Police Department and the Department of Justice - Division of Criminal Investigation.

Department of Justice spokesperson Dana Brueck says they believe there is no public safety threat to the community at this time.

JANESVILLE (WKOW) -- Officials have confirmed a death investigation is underway in Rock County.

Rock County Communications tells 27 News Janesville police have been on scene in the 4100 block of Kennedy Road in Janesville since about 5:30 Sunday evening.

No other information is available at this time.
