Authorities warn of dangerous drug that causes scaly skin

(WKOW) -- Wisconsin officials are keeping an eye on a new synthetic drug that's been showing up in parts of the U.S.

Krokodil has been found as close as Chicago. Krokodil is the Russian word for 'crocodile'. It's gets its nickname because users report black or green scaly skin as a side effect.

Krokodil is used as a substitute for heroin, because it can be found cheaper.

"It's a concern because a lot of the cocaine and heroin currently in this area is coming from southern Wisconsin and from Illinois," says Marathon County Sheriff Scott Parks.
Wisconsin currently has no reported cases of Krokodil or people suffering from symptoms of it but authorities say with a growing heroin problem in the state, it might not be too far away. Many drugs travel up from Chicago or Minneapolis to users here in Wisconsin.
