WI DNR to hold hearing on Lake Superior nets

Posted:

MADISON (WKOW) – The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources is asking the public for their input on a new rule for the Lake Superior commercial fishing trap nets.

Under current rule, commercial fishers can place nets in what's known as a restricted use area during the summer.  Those areas include between Houghton Point and Long Island Point and between Long Island Point and the southernmost point of Madeleine Island.  However, DNR officials are saying the nets' use creates safety risks for boaters.

The new rules would limit fishers to using a single trap per commercial license in the area.  It would exclude nets from a so-called zone of safe passage through the area.  The new rule would also require fishers to remove their nets within three days of the close of the fishing season.

The DNR has a public hearing on the rules in Bayfield on November 7.
