Buckled Green Bay bridge will open early next year

GREEN BAY (WKOW) -- Wisconsin transportation officials hope to reopen the sagging Leo Frigo bridge in Green Bay by early next year.

State Department of Transportation secretary Mark Gottlieb said Tuesday the agency will be putting out bids that ask for repair work to be completed by January 17, and offers incentives for finishing earlier and penalties for missing the deadline.

State officials shut down the Leo Frigo Memorial Bridge September 25 after it was found to be sagging about two feet. It has sunk another three-quarters of an inch since then.

Transportation officials say they hope for work to start November 4, and will involve drilling down and sinking structural shafts into underlying bedrock. They say four piers that show signs of corrosion will be reinforced.
