Johnson says he wants avoid another shutdown

MADISON, Wis. (AP) -- Wisconsin Republican Sen. Ron Johnson says he is going to do everything he can to avoid another federal government shutdown.

Both Johnson and Wisconsin's other senator, Democrat Tammy Baldwin, have been named to a special budget conference committee designed to come up with a budget compromise by Dec. 13. U.S. Rep. Paul Ryan, of Janesville, is the panel's co-chair.

Johnson said in an interview Tuesday that Republicans and Democrats can't even agree on what the size of the problem is that they face. But he says hopes both sides can work together to find a solution.

Baldwin was scheduled to tour a University of Wisconsin-Madison lab on Tuesday to tout her support for federal funding to pay for research and development work like that done at the UW facility.
