Veterans celebrate anniversary of U.S.S. Wisconsin recommission

MADISON (WKOW) -- The Wisconsin Veterans Museum hosted a celebration Tuesday recognizing the 25th anniversary of the recommissioning of the U.S.S. Wisconsin.

The battleship served in World War II and the Korean War before she was decommissioned. The ship was recommissioned in 1988 before serving in Operation Desert Storm.

One of the founders of the U.S.S. Wisconsin Association, a group that formed after the ship was recommissioned, talked about what it was like being assigned to the Wisconsin.

"I wanted to get away from Wisconsin and get out and see the world. Finished boot camp on the cold and windy Great Lakes. Then we got our orders, I'm going to the U.S.S. Wisconsin. So I couldn't seem to escape," said Dave Patrykus, a member of the U.S.S. Wisconsin Association.

Members of the U.S.S. Wisconsin Association received a certificate of recognition from the state at the celebration. The group holds reunions every two years. Click here for more information.

The U.S.S Wisconsin is now a museum ship, docked in Norfolk, Virginia.
