Polar bear euthanized at Milwaukee zoo

MILWAUKEE (WKOW) --  A polar bear at the Milwaukee County Zoo had to be euthanized Tuesday.

The zoo says Willie, the 28-year-old male bear, became so sick he could not eat or stand.

The zoo's curator of large mammals, Tim Wild, says veterinary staff members found fluid in Willie's abdomen.

The zoo plans to conduct a necropsy, which is an animal autopsy.

Willie came to Milwaukee in 2011 from the North Carolina Zoo in Asheboro as a temporary guest while his exhibit was renovated.

The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reports the Milwaukee County Zoo still has a female polar bear, Snow Lilly.
