Races may give people a run for their money

Eau Claire (WQOW) - 5K's, fun run's, marathons and even dashes: there seems to be a race every weekend in Eau Claire. While most races have the proceeds go to charity, some companies put on runs for profit.

Today, Eau Claire's Waterways and Parks Commission will discuss whether these groups should pay higher rental fees. Right now, all groups just reimburse the city for what services they use, like garbage disposal or road blocks.

The Parks Department says some for-profit events, like Festival in the Pines, bring people to Eau Claire who stays in hotels: part of their room tax directly benefits city parks. Smaller events, like 5K's, don't draw in as many tourists. Most participants are local.

"When you have a for-profit group that may or may not be giving some of their money to a non-profit or they may be keeping it, Parks and Rec may not be getting reimbursed or may not be getting some additional funds to make improvements for the wear and tear on our facilities," says Phil Fieber of the Eau Claire Parks and Recreation Department.

Phil Fieber says they would be following in the footsteps of other institutions, like the School District and the University, who charge higher fees depending on the group.
