Alleged gas thief arrested

Eau Claire (WQOW) - Driving off without paying for gas is a pretty common occurrence in the area. Thanks to one observant worker and a system that allows police and businesses to communicate with each other an alleged gas thief was caught.

Police were looking for the driver of gold van who allegedly drove off without paying for gas from at least twelve gas stations in Eau Claire, Chippewa, and Barron counties.  They posted the information on the Wisconsin Crime Alert Network, which keeps businesses and other subscribers informed on local criminal activity. A short time later a worker at an Eau Claire Kwik Trip noticed the van and called police. Wayne L. Taylor was arrested. Law enforcement says cooperation and observation were key in making the arrest.

"The Eau Claire police department, Chippewa County Sheriff's Department and Barron County and Rice Lake as well as Kwik Trip. We have a private business that has trained their individuals and they have paid a small fee to have the crime network and it's really something that pays off in cases like this," said Eau Claire police Department Officer Kyle Roder.

Taylor will make his initial appearance in Eau Claire county court next Wednesday.
