Teachers given gift cards to offset out-of-pocket expenses

Eau Claire (WQOW) - Pencils, notebooks, markers and erasers: classroom supplies can quickly add up for teachers. Today, some local educators were given a little help.

20 teachers from Delong Middle School were given $50 gift cards to purchase classroom supplies as part of Sam's Club Teacher Rewards.  The program is designed to offset the money teachers spend out of their own pockets. For one eighth grade English teacher, it's up to $300 each year.

"I've already gone through 250 pencils. So, pencils, notebooks, the daily stuff that we need, small things like that will be the bulk of it for sure. Maybe a little candy though, I don't know," says Delong Teacher Derick Black.

This is the fifth year for the program. Each year 90,000 teachers are chosen nationwide.
