Local Veteran helped by Bloomer AMVET Post

Eau Claire (WQOW)- When a local veteran found himself in need of some help, it was some of his colleagues who were there to lend him a hand.

Members of AMVETS Post 6440 in Bloomer have recently started a welcome home program to help find furniture and other household items for Veterans and others who may be in need.  And it has paid off in a big way.

This individual served 20 years, did two tours in Iraq.  He soon found himself in a situation where he was working, and living out of a semi-truck.  He was able to secure housing, rent an apartment, but the apartment was empty," says Post 6440 member Mike Hanke.  "Through social networking, I put a post out there asking people to donate items.  I think within 72 hours the amount of items I had was phenomenal."

The Post says the response has been so overwhelming that they are now looking for a storage unit to house the donations until they can find people in need of the items.

"We will be acting like sort of a central clearing house for people in need, veterans and the people in need in the community surrounding Bloomer," says Post Commander Tom Vodacek.  "We will be taking donations of household goods, furniture, beds, etc., and distributing them to people who need them."

There are hopes to add an Eau Claire chapter sometime next year.

If you would like to make a donation you can visit the Bloomer AMVET"S Facebook page here.
