27 Kids Who Matter: Mayra & Sanyi

MADISON (WKOW) -- A lot of people use the excuse they're too busy to explain why they don't volunteer their time. But one Madison woman says that's why she became a Big Sister, to have some time for fun and relaxation!

Mayra Medrano was matched with Sanyi a year ago through Big Brothers Big Sisters of Dane County's School Friends program. Mayra says, "I live in this community and wanted to be part of something I could maybe become a resource for somebody."

She's been more than a resource; she's been like a big sister to Sanyi, spending one lunch hour a week playing games and talking.

Mayra already works full time and volunteers her time elsewhere too: as a board member for the Latino Chamber of Commerce, and helping with United Way and the YWCA of Dane County. Her full schedule is the reason why she likes her time with Sanyi so much. "You're working, you're busy you have deadlines to meet. you know, it's really nice to take a half hour to play Monopoly!"

With the School Friends program, Mayra says you really have no excuse. You have a standing appointment, so you can work your schedule around it, not try to work it into your schedule. And the rewards last a lot longer than the hour or so you spend every week. "Sometimes you have a tendency to be very serious and this is what I have to do Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday and it's really nice that you can just relax. Make it interactive. you know play a game, maybe a game you haven't played in years because you decided to grow up."

Sanyi says she know she's lucky Mayra decided to get involved, because she knows other classmates who are still waiting. In just her class, she says, "there's like 3 or 4 people who want to get a big sister."

MADISON (WKOW) -- A lot of us use the excuse "We're too busy" to explain why we can't volunteer our time.

But one Madison woman says being busy is why she loves being a big sister through Big Brothers Big Sisters of Dane County.

It gives her time to relax and enjoy herself!
