Father of Brayden Turnbill says he tried to alert authorities to danger

Posted:

MADISON (WKOW) -- The father of a five year old homicide victim says he contacted authorities in the past over the child's safety.

Officials say five year old Brayden Turnbill was killed last week. Officers responded to the Sun Prairie home where the child was living after becoming aware Turnbill had suffered injuries.

Turnbill's father, Anthony Turnbill tells 27 News he contacted the Dane County Sheriff's office and child protective services in the past, with concerns about the boy's treatment in his mother's care. Turnbill suggested little was done to ensure the child was not at risk.

"The allegations were made last summer that there was abuse happening," Turnbill tells 27 News.

Dane County Sheriff's spokesperson Elise Schaffer says records show Sheriff's personnel had contact with Turnbill in May and July of 2012.

Schaffer says records show in both instances, the law enforcement involvement revolved around child custody issues and Turnbill desire to see his son. Schaffer says the records not no child endangerment claims.

After a Dane County Human Services official referred 27 News to the Wisconsin Department of Children and Families on Turnbill's claims he reported concerns about the boy's treatment, a spokesperson said no information could be released on any child's case.

"He fell through the cracks," Turnbill tells 27 News.

Turnbill tells 27 News his grief over his son's death is compounded by accusations lodged against him Monday in connection with a separate child.

Turnbill and his 17-year old son Tyler Turnbill were charged with felony crimes for what authorities say was the repeated, sexual assault of a teenage girl. Both father and son remain free on signature bonds.

Anthony Turnbill tells 27 News the accusations are "sickening," and denies he sexually assaulted the girl, and says his son Tyler is also blameless. Dane County District Attorney Ismael Ozanne has yet to respond to a request for comment from 27 News on the criminal charges.

According to a criminal complaint, the girl told investigators the sexual assaults by Tyler Turnbill began when she was approximately ten years old. The complaint states Anthony Turnbill forced the girl to touch him inappropriately, and also touched her inappropriately.
