Xcel Energy has a warning for its customers about a scam

Eau Claire (WQOW)- Xcel Energy has a warning for its customers. This year more than 120 scams involving fake utility bills have been reported, including a few in western Wisconsin.

The scams typically involve someone posing as an Xcel employee, threatening that the customer will lose service unless they provide checking or bank info over the phone to pay off a past due bill. Xcel says in some cases the scammers tell customers to buy a pre-paid cash card to use as payment. They've even been able to make caller ID indicate the call is actually from Xcel.

Xcel wants to remind its customers to only use authorized methods to pay bills. That does not include pre-paid cash cards.

To report anything suspicious call Xcel at 1-800-895-4999.
