Trick or treat safety tips

Eau Claire (WQOW) - Trick or treating is less than 24 hours away. Before the kids are on a sugar high, it's important to talk Halloween safety.

The Eau Claire Police Department says costumes should be light in color for visibility. They also say kids should carry a flashlight or a glow-stick.  And, here's another tip: use face paint when possible instead of masks, which can block vision.

"We encourage families to make this a family event. Go out with your children, not only to monitor them but to have the family experience," says Kyle Roder of the Eau Claire Police Department.

And one more important safety reminder: don't cross in the middle of the street or between cars, use the crosswalk.
