Elementary pumpkin contest enters its 20th year

Eau Claire (WQOW) - Fifth grader Emma Johnson won the 20th Annual Pumpkin Decorating Contest at Sam Davey Elementary School.

Her pumpkins formed a dog, named Mocha, which was inside of a dog house.

Eau Claire (WQOW) - Whether they're painted, carved, glued or baked, some Eau Claire kids were very creative with pumpkins this year.

Every year fourth and fifth graders at Sam Davey Elementary School enter their works of art into a competition. Students complete the designs at home with their families before bringing them in to be judged. The contest started twenty years ago which, coincidentally, is when the current art teacher started.

"I'm just amazed. Year after year there is something new. I like the fact that the students vote. It's not always the ones with the best execution, it's the ones that appeal to the students the most," Danie Johnson, Sam Davey Art Teacher says.

Johnson says you can always tell what's on trend for the year based on the pumpkins designs. This year, there were five different entries of minions from the movie "Despicable Me."  The winner will be announced tomorrow.
