Fatal crash on Clairemont Avenue: Driver pleads guilty

Eau Claire (WQOW) - The man responsible for a deadly crash could end up in prison.

On Wednesday, a plea bargain was reached with the driver in a fatal crash on Clairemont Avenue.  Travis Hazelton pleaded guilty to five charges, including homicide by drunk driving, for the crash that killed his passenger.  Jesse Schreiner died in July of 2012.

Investigators say Hazelton had been kicked out of a tavern because he was drunk.  Minutes later, witnesses reported he was hanging out of his van window, speeding, and swerving on Clairemont before crashing into a line of cars at a stoplight, injuring three others.

As part of the plea bargain, the Eau Claire County DA's office will recommend Hazelton be given 12 years in prison when he's sentenced in January.  The judge is not required to follow that recommendation.
