Eau Claire (WQOW) - After a successful 5 year run, organizers of the Eau Claire Marathon say that the event will not be held next year, and likely beyond.
Marathon organizer Karen Drechsel says the race is being discontinued for a number of reasons. They are now having to compete for runners with marathons in Green Bay and Minneapolis, and there has also been an increase in Eau Claire area races all year round.
"We were trying many different factors coming in, we presented different things to different people and it just wasn't going to work," says Drechsel. "I'm very happy that we had the marathon for the community. It was getting the community up and being active and I've seen success in what we've done."
The marathon first began as a way to raise money for a new Eau Claire YMCA. In the past 5 years the event has brought in well over $100,000.
