Anti-abortion bills moving ahead in Senate

MADISON (WKOW) – Two Republican-sponsored anti-abortion bills could be passed next week as they move forward in the state Senate on Thursday.

The Senate Health and Human Services Committee is set to vote on the measures that have already passed in the Assembly.  The full Senate could take up the bills as soon as Tuesday.

One bill would ban abortions based on the sex of the fetus.  The other bill would prohibit the state health insurance from covering abortions as well as exempt religious organizations from providing insurance coverage of contraceptives.

Democratic opponents accuse Republicans of using the proposals to dictate the medical care of women and score points with the conservative base.

Governor Scott Walker supports both of the bills.
