Eau Claire (WQOW) -- The defending NCAA Division III champion UW-Eau Claire Blugolds get a new season going Friday night against St. Olaf (MN).
UWEC head coach Matt Loen says last year's experience has helped push his team in the offseason.
"I think that's why we were successful, we have depth at each position and you have to push yourself to get into to the lineup," says Loen, "that creates competition and obviously creates success on the weekends."
UW-Eau Claire graduated a fair amount of talent from that championship team, but Loen says some good players are ready to step into key roles.
"We had some freshmen last year that didn't really get playing time last year, but they're good players," Loen says, "so, we're hoping they can step in and provide some of that offensive role. We brought in a good recruiting class, a couple of division one transfers and nine freshman and they're all good hockey players. So hopefully we can find a good mix with our team and go from there."
The Blugolds will raise their national championship banner prior to Friday's game.
