Operation Homecoming: Reuniting military families

Posted:

(WKOW) – It's always heartwarming to see the stories portraying the reunion between a soldier and their loved ones but ABC's Josh Elliot has decided to take a closer look at the sacrifice on both ends.

At its highpoint, 100,000 Americans were in Afghanistan in 2009 and about 48,000 will be there through the holidays.

Elliot traveled to Afghanistan to see first-hand the sacrifices military families make every day for America.

Elliot spoke with Brittany Lotts whose husband, Bart, is overseas serving in Afghanistan.  She recently gave birth to their daughter who has never met her father.  Brittany says, "I have a little countdown and every day I mark down one day."

Although Bart missed the birth of his daughter, he says it was a sacrifice he was willing to make. Bart says, "You only have the birth of your first child once.  But you know, America says I need to be over here.  They wouldn't call it service if it was easy."

Elliot delves into their lives and captures the moment they reunite after a nine-month deployment and Bart finally gets to meet his baby girl.

27 News wants to extend a thank you to all those in the military, past and present, for their service and immeasurable sacrifice.
